Belgin BAYRAK has completed her MSc on psychiatric nursing from Hacettepe University in Turkey. She has still continued her PhD in the same university. She is working in Public Hospitals Agency of Turkey, Ministry of Health. She is responsible for community mental health centers.
The model in mental health services has changed in Turkey with National Mental Health Action Plan. The transition from hospital-based model, which was the dominant model in Turkey previously, to community-based model is adopted.
Within the scope of NMHAP, the studies on decreasing the number of the beds in depot hospitals, increasing the number of beds of psychiatry in general hospitals, creating awareness against stigmatization and discrimination, preventing violence against women, preventing violence against kids, preventing suicides, preventing the psychiatric consequences of calamities and traumas and increasing the resources of people working in the field of mental health.
The most important study carried out in this scope is the establishment of Community Mental Health Centers (CMHC). CMHC are the centers where the compliance to treatment of the patients, having severe psychotic disturbance after being discharged from the hospital is assessed, psychoeducation directed on individuals and families are organized, psychosocial intervention is done. With the services rendered in these centers, compliance to treatment of the patients, having severe psychotic disturbance is increased and their integrity into the society is provided by developing their social skills.
Nurses work as case manager in those centers. They carry out all follow-ups of the patient for whom s/he is working as case manager, and contribute to the patient care plans of the other patients in patient care plan meetings. Furthermore, they conduct programs such as psychoeducation, social skill training within the scope of trainings.
