Parvaneh Vasli is an assistant professor in Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences (SBMU). She worked in a nursing administration in one of main medical university in Iran as a coordinator between educational hospitals and emergency departments. She conducted some research related to emergency nursing and published them in Iranian and international journal.
Introduction: The emergency department (ED) is a dynamic and potentially hazardous patient care environment where patient volume, involuntary admissions, types, and activities rapidly change. The purpose of this study was to explain the crisis in emergency departments from nurses’ points of views in Iran.
Methods: This study is a qualitative research with a content analysis approach. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews with 18 nurses working in emergency departments of general and trauma hospital. Participants were selected through purposive sampling method. Interviews lasted between 45 minutes to an hour. The data were recorded and transcribed. The accuracy and consistency of data were confirmed. Interviews were conducted until no new data were emerged. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis with conventional approach.
Results: Three main themes were emerged through data analysis including: unexpected imbalance as a nature of crisis, events and defect in service provider factors as causes of crisis and positive-negative consequences as a result of crisis.
Discussion: The results of this study revealed that every factor that can affect balance and daily tasks which make the crisis in emergency departments. Causes of the crisis can be divided into internal or external factors. Several measures should be planned to decrease the crisis in emergency departments. Health services authorities can use these results to make comprehensive plans in order to reduce emergency crises.
