Title : Sensitizing acute care nurses’ attitudes related to the obese patient: An effort to eliminate weight-related stigma

Discussion during the presentation will be focused on the DNP synthesis project research and implementation.  Specifically, literature supports that weight-related stigma is a present and growing problem in today’s healthcare system and can lead to poor patient experiences, limit healthcare seeking behaviour, and can actually increase the possibility of developing depression and social isolation.  The synthesis project evaluates how a video intervention affect acute care nurses’ attitudes toward obese people and raises awareness of weight-related stigma in healthcare in hopes of eliminating it in the future.

Rachel obtained her BSN from LaGrange College in 2009 and nursed full time in the emergency department.  While continuing to work per diem, Rachel began teaching undergraduate nursing students full time at West Georgia Technical College from 2014 to 2016.  Rachel is currently obtaining her Doctor of Nursing practice degree from Troy University and will graduate in December 2020.  Rachel is focusing her doctoral synthesis project on raising awareness of weight-related stigma in healthcare by evaluating the effects of a video intervention on nurses’ attitudes toward obese people.  She hopes to share her research with other to eliminate weight-related stigma.
