Abstract:
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic effects on every aspect of life including nursing education, especially the nursing students who must practice with patients in the clinic.
Objectives: To examine the efficacy of virtual learning and authentic learning on Maternal and Child and Midwifery nursing competencies, learning achievement, attitude, and nursing students’ satisfaction at Boromarajonani College of Nursing Khon Kaen.
Methods: A quasi-experimental research was applied in this study. Seventy-five third-year nursing students were enrolled in the Maternal Child and Midwifery Nursing I practicum. The nursing students were divided into 2 groups; 30 students practiced at hospitals and 45 nursing students practiced in the virtual classroom. The online platforms used in the virtual classroom included Google Meet, Zoom meeting, Line application, Moodle application, obstetric models, and standardized patients. The data were collected using questionnaires, including maternal-child and
midwifery nursing competency, attitude, satisfaction, and learning achievement. Descriptive statistics were used and differences between the mean scores of the two groups were compared using an independent t-test.
Results: The average scores of students who practiced using virtual learning and those who practiced at the hospital on the competency of maternal child and midwifery nursing were high. 2) The average scores of learning achievement were higher than the standard scores (70%) in both groups. 3) The average scores of attitude and satisfaction in students who practiced by virtual classroom were high in all items.
Conclusions: The virtual classroom is one of the hybrid models that nursing educators can apply for critical situations that we cannot provide authentic learning for nursing students.
