Aim: To analyze the documented effects of nurse incivility for individuals and organizations and discuss strategies to address nurse incivility.
Background: Nurse incivility is the deliberate and habitual abusive conduct that occurs by one or more perpetrators and takes several forms. Nurse incivility continues to add additional strain and burden to an already stressful healthcare environment.
Methodology: An literature review was performed. A total of 24 articles were selected for review and retrieved through databases that included MEDLINE, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO, SocINDEX, and Academic Search Complete. Eligibility included studies published between 2012 – 2021.
Findings: There was a limited number of evidence-based studies on individual and organizational strategies to address incivility. Individual strategies focused on assertive communication which was found to be ineffective. Organizational strategies mainly focused on educational strategies versus a team approach to incivility.
Recommendations: Acknowledgment of the depth of the incivility issue and a willingness to tackle change are needed on a personal and organizational level along with a need to develop innovative and creative solutions to face the problem. More evidence-based studies are needed to guide nurse leaders on strategies to address incivility
