Title : Second victim phenomenon
Health care workers go into work every day to help their patients; unfortunately not all patients will have ideal outcomes, for a variety of reasons. When an unanticipated adverse event happens, too often we forget the health care workers involved in the event. Health care workers are required to deal with a multitude of emotionally stressful things on a daily basis, yet support after adverse patient events seems to be forgotten at times. Second victim phenomenon is the term used to describe the experience of the healthcare worker involved in an adverse patient outcome. This presentation will describe second victim phenomenon, illustrate the support required, describe current research findings, and describe some lived experiences of second victims. Be warned this presentation may be emotionally taxing for some, but is definitely a topic worth talking about.
