Title : Creating a sustainable clinical instructor onboarding program

Clinical Instructor's (CI) currently do not have a consistent orientation process at Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC). CVMC offers local nursing schools’ clinical opportunities. These clinical instructors are a mix of CVMC employees as well as non-employees. There was not a consistent process to ensure all instructors were oriented to CVMC's processes and standards, and even clinical locations within. Feedback from CVMC staff and management prompted development of consistent orientation for these clinical instructors. Therefore, a Clinical Instructor Onboarding Program was created and implemented in August 2017 for all clinical instructors that would have clinical rotations on site. From a literature review, there was existing evidence for clinical instructor onboarding programs prior to having student rotations, but limited information for programs involving small community hospitals. The literature was analyzed and internal content resource experts at Catawba Valley Medical Center were utilized to design a program for the Clinical Instructor to receive required onboarding training on the following: clinical coordination council process, EMR process, BMV process, teamwork experience, patient experience, HCAHPS, core measures, infection prevention, patient safety, medication disposal, and equipment overview. This provided consistent training to ensure all instructors received the same information.
