Title : Beyond cultural competence: Integrating cultural intelligence into professional nursing education and practice

Abstract:

Background: Cultural competence is a foundational nursing skill, but today’s dynamic healthcare environments require the broader, adaptive framework of cultural intelligence (CQ). This study investigates the role of AI-enhanced assignments in promoting CQ among RN-to-BSN students in a transcultural nursing course.

Purpose: To evaluate the progression of RN-to-BSN students from cultural competence to cultural intelligence and explore their perceptions of CQ’s relevance to future nursing practice.

Methods: A mixed-methods action research design will be used. Participants will complete pre- and post-intervention surveys using the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) and Cultural Competence Assessment (CCA) tools. Three previously completed AI-based assignments featuring simulated cultural scenarios, and AI cultural intelligence assessments will be analyzed for evidence of cultural reflection and adaptability. Final data will include self-reflective activities and group discussion and exploration to assess behavioral and attitudinal shifts.

Intervention: AI tools were embedded in three culturally diverse student assignments to challenge students’ assumptions, promote self-reflection, and build CQ dimensions (Drive, Knowledge, Strategy, Action).

Expected Outcomes: We anticipate increased student awareness, motivation, and adaptability in cross-cultural settings. Insights from this project will guide curricular design for transcultural nursing education and inform future use of AI to support professional cultural growth.

Conclusion: This research bridges education, technology, and practice, offering a replicable model for cultivating cultural intelligence in nursing professionals.
