Abstract:

Aim: This study aimed to compare breastfeeding attitudes, comfort levels, satisfaction, and expressed breast milk volume among working mothers following the use of traditional and wearable breast pumps.

Methods: This semi-experimental study with a single-group repeated measures design included 28 working, breastfeeding mothers with infants aged 3–12 months. Participants used traditional and wearable breast pumps sequentially for one week each. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, Breastfeeding Attitude Evaluation Scale, Comfort Scale, Satisfaction Form, and Expressed Milk Volume Measurement Form. Descriptive statistics, paired-samples t-test, and linear mixed-effects model analysis were utilized for data evaluation.

Results: Wearable breast pump usage resulted in significantly higher maternal comfort and satisfaction levels compared to traditional pump usage (p < 0.001). Furthermore, mothers' overall breastfeeding attitude scores increased post-intervention (p < 0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in the average volume of milk expressed between traditional and wearable breast pumps (p > 0.05). Linear mixed-effects model analysis revealed that the comfort advantage provided by the wearable breast pump was maintained over the 7-day period (p < 0.001), while expressed milk volume did not significantly vary by pump type or days (p > 0.05). Qualitative feedback indicated that mothers valued the wearable pump primarily for its comfort, hands-free operation, and freedom of movement. 

Conclusion: Wearable breast pumps may improve comfort, satisfaction, and breastfeeding attitudes among working mothers without reducing expressed milk volume. However, further studies with larger sample sizes are required to establish more robust evidence. To help working mothers sustain breastfeeding and improve neonatal health, midwives and nurses may suggest wearable breast pumps as a comfort-enhancing alternative.

Melika Mazinani graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery from Sakarya University, Turkey, in 2020. She then worked for two years in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and in the labor ward. In 2024, she began her MSc studies in Obstetrics and Gynecology Nursing at Izmir Katip Celebi University, where she is currently continuing her education.
