Title : Cultivating healthy aging and longevity through holistic and integrative nursing practice

Abstract:

Healthy aging and longevity are increasingly recognized as multidimensional processes shaped by biological, psychological, social, and environmental influences. Within this context, holistic and integrative nursing offers a valuable framework for addressing the root causes of chronic illness while promoting resilience, vitality, and quality of life across the lifespan. This presentation explores healthy aging through a functional medicine lens, emphasizing personalized, systems-based care that aligns with core principles of holistic nursing. Drawing on clinical experience and emerging evidence, the session highlights how integrative nursing approaches can support longevity by addressing key modifiable factors, including nutrition, sleep, stress regulation, movement, environmental exposures, and social connection. Rather than focusing solely on disease management, this model prioritizes early identification of imbalances, prevention strategies, and the restoration of optimal function. Attendees will be introduced to practical tools such as functional health assessments, timeline mapping, and root-cause analysis to better understand patient narratives and guide individualized care planning. The presentation also examines the role of the nurse as a therapeutic partner in fostering sustainable lifestyle change. Emphasis is placed on building meaningful relationships, supporting behavior change through motivational interviewing, and cultivating patient empowerment. In addition, the integration of mind-body practices, including mindfulness and stress reduction techniques, will be discussed as essential components of healthy aging that enhance both physiological and emotional well-being. By bridging holistic nursing principles with functional medicine perspectives, this session offers a practical and forward-thinking approach to supporting longevity. Participants will leave with actionable insights and adaptable strategies to enhance patient care, promote self-healing, and contribute to a more sustainable and person-centered model of healthcare that supports healthy aging for diverse populations.
