Title : Leading through the unknown: Keeping nursing teams motivated during times of uncertainty and change

Abstract:

Healthcare organizations continue to face unprecedented levels of change driven by workforce shortages, financial pressures, evolving care delivery models, regulatory requirements, and rapid technological advancement. During periods of uncertainty, nurse leaders are challenged not only to maintain operational performance but also to preserve engagement, resilience, and trust among their teams. Without intentional leadership strategies, uncertainty can contribute to increased burnout, turnover, disengagement, and declines in patient care outcomes. This presentation explores practical, evidence-informed approaches nurse leaders can use to sustain motivation and foster a culture of stability during times of organizational change. Participants will examine the impact of uncertainty on frontline nurses, identify common barriers to engagement, and learn leadership techniques that promote psychological safety, transparent communication, recognition, shared decision-making, and professional growth. Real-world examples from healthcare organizations navigating workforce challenges and transformational change will be shared to illustrate successful strategies for maintaining team morale and strengthening organizational commitment. Attendees will leave with actionable tools to support resilience, enhance communication, and create an environment where nurses feel valued, heard, and empowered despite ongoing change. By investing in trust, connection, and purpose, nurse leaders can transform uncertainty into an opportunity for growth, innovation, and sustained workforce engagement.
