Title : Leading with courage: Empowerment in nursing leadership through difficult conversations
Abstract:
Leading with Courage: Empowerment in Nursing Leadership Through Difficult Conversations examines how nurse leaders can strengthen their effectiveness by engaging in difficult conversations with clarity, confidence, and purpose. The presentation highlights a shift from traditional, authority-based leadership toward authentic and transformational approaches that prioritize relationships, psychological safety, and team engagement. Key concepts include the exploration of leadership styles and their impact on team dynamics, with an emphasis on emotional intelligence as a foundational leadership competency. Core components-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, social skills, and humility—are presented as essential for fostering trust, improving communication, and supporting both patient outcomes and staff well-being. The presentation also differentiates between values and virtues, encouraging leaders to align their actions with deeply held principles rather than external expectations. This alignment supports authentic leadership and helps leaders navigate the tension between performance-driven metrics and what truly matters, such as patient safety and team support. A critical focus is placed on effective communication strategies, particularly in high-stakes or uncomfortable situations. The distinction between feedback and advice is explored, emphasizing that feedback should be specific, actionable, and focused on improvement. Practical tools, including the 3–2–1 speaking framework and the 1–2–3 communication method, are introduced to help leaders remain grounded, communicate clearly, and foster collaborative dialogue. Ultimately, the presentation reinforces that leadership is not about avoiding discomfort but about leading through it. By developing emotional intelligence, aligning with core values, and applying structured communication strategies, nurse leaders can create environments that promote growth, resilience, and excellence in patient care.
