Title : Nurse coaching within the hospital
Abstract:
My presentation will be based on my experience Health & Wellness Coaching as a Board Certified Nurse Coach within the Hospital I work for. I will go into detail about how my work as a Nurse Coach came to fruition within the Hospital including discussions with my manager and Chief Nursing Officer. My experience includes pre & post data from surveys that support the profound benefits that Nurse Coaching has on both individuals and the department as a whole. I will also explain the format of our typical group coaching sessions, giving examples of topics, self-care practices, and goal-setting.
The overall goal of Nurse Coaching for hospital staff and leadership is to create a space of vulnerability and sharing, to effectively decrease burnout by increasing resiliency and creating a sense of belonging. Nurse Coaching is the missing piece in our training as hospital staff during this age of burnout. Our New Graduate Nurses and New Hires are overwhelmed with necessary skills-based competency training with policy and procedure education; but lack the personal, humanist connection to their co-workers that gives them a sense of community, and support. Factors such as lack of staffing and petitions for better pay may persist; Nurse Coaching serves as an added benefit and outlet for staff & leadership to both find refuge in and rebuild a culture of feeling valued.
The audience will learn how to show the value of Nurse Coaching to their organization, provide an appropriate proposal, utilize health assessment tools, goal setting strategies, and guided visualization and meditation practices. As a bedside nurse, Nurse Coaching can be used with patients during education conversations for motivation and goal setting. For leadership and management, Nurse Coaching tools and strategies can be used as a leadership style to guide staff meetings and create a community team culture.
With the limited amount of Nurse Coaching literature and research available, my presentation will provide the audience with pre & post survey data from participants including anecdotal feedback in quotations, and serve as a tangible perspective of what Nurse Coaching is all about and it’s value for healthcare. The appeal for hospital administration and executives would be saving money by increasing retention and reducing high turnover rates.
