Title : Development of a coaching program on leadership for selected personnel in a healthcare environment
Abstract:
Introduction: Effective leadership is crucial in the healthcare sector, significantly impacting organizational performance and patient outcomes. Strong leaders enhance team dynamics, improve communication, and foster a culture of continuous improvement, that leads to better patient care. As healthcare systems become more complex, there is a pressing need for leaders who can navigate technological advancements and meet evolving patient needs. This study investigates the impact of a structured coaching program enhancing leadership capabilities among healthcare professionals at a tertiary medical center in the Philippines.
Objectives: To assess and improve key dimensions of leadership among participants, focusing on self-awareness, knowledge, leadership behavior, and skills. A tailored coaching intervention based on the ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate) model was implemented to create an effective learning experience that addresses the unique demands of the healthcare environment.
Methods: A quasi-experimental design involved 57 participants, divided into an experimental and a control group. Baseline leadership capabilities were assessed using modified Leadership Behavior Descriptions and Skills Questionnaires. The coaching program included interactive workshops, one-on-one coaching, and group discussions. Post-test assessments evaluated changes in leadership capabilities.
Results: Significant improvements were observed across all metrics. Self-awareness scores from 2.9 to 4.86; knowledge of leadership rose from 2.9 to 4.86; leadership behavior improved from 3.3 to 4.49; and overall skills increased from 2.9 to 4.96. Participants rated the coaching program highly, with a mean score of 4.88.
Conclusion: Targeted coaching significantly enhances leadership competencies among healthcare professionals. Investing in structured coaching programs is essential for fostering leadership excellence and improving organizational effectiveness and patient outcomes.
