Title : Provider knowledge of trauma-informed care in the emergency department
Abstract:
The United States human population is susceptible to experiencing trauma daily. When you dive into smaller, more vulnerable communities, the susceptibility to experiencing drama increases. The U.S. military population experiences the same trauma as non-military, but now introduce military related trauma. Military members and veterans are at a higher risk than the general population to have experienced a stress-related response such as post-traumatic stress disorder. Adopting trauma- informed care can ultimately make that interaction a much more effective experience. Trauma- informed care is a framework that allows for an understanding and helps those that have been affected by trauma. This presentation will describe the 90-day DNP project of applying the Brief Trauma Questionnaire to patients in the emergency department at a military healthcare facility, where providers will then initiate trauma-informed care (TIC) based on the patient’s score. The overall aims of the project were increase provider knowledge of a trauma informed care framework, implement trauma-informed care interventions, and improve patient outcomes. This was completed by utilizing a 38-question self-report instrument that consists of 5 categories to assess provider attitudes, knowledge, and practice of trauma-informed care before and after trauma-informed care training. After data analysis, we concluded that there was a statistical difference between the pre and post survey after the TIC education was administered to the providers. In addition to a statistically significant data analysis, 50% of ED providers answered that TIC is extremely useful and the other 50% said TIC is very useful in practice. Fifty percent of providers also answered they are extremely likely to use TIC in their practice, with the other 50% answering they were likely to use TIC in their practice. Overall, this simple, yet highly beneficial, project has set the precedent for how emergency room physicians and mid-levels provide care in a military hospital.
