Title : Decreasing workplace violence in the emergency department
Abstract:
Workplace violence (WPV) is of growing concern in the hospital setting. Emergency departments (ED) are statistically high areas of incidence for WPV. In our area we collaborated with Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) of East Tennessee to create an education course for ED staff on de-escalation strategies and safety techniques to reduce WPV. We were able to decrease ED WPV by 39% from 2019 to 2022. This also resulted in a decrease in workers compensation claims, increased team member satisfaction, and improved patient satisfaction.
Audience Take Away Notes:
- Participants will be able to explain the necessary steps for developing a modified healthcare crisis intervention team program.
- Participants will gain knowledge on ways to adapt existing community programs into more specific, focused programs to provided crisis knowledge to other emergency department staff.
- Participants will recognize the impact of emergency department workplace violence and the need for crisis intervention team collaboration.
