Title : Assessment of psychological distress and emotional well-being among patients attending screening for common cancers at tertiary cancer hospital: A cross-sectional study
Abstract:
Background: Cancer screening plays a pivotal role in early detection and improved treatment outcomes, yet the psychological impact on individuals undergoing screening remains underexplored. The emotional toll during this critical phase of cancer care is often underestimated, necessitating a focused investigation. This study seeks to address the research gap by comprehensively assessing psychological distress and emotional well-being among patients undergoing cancer screening at a tertiary cancer hospital.
Objective: The purpose of this study is the development of targeted interventions and psychosocial support programs, directly impacting patient-centred care. By addressing the emotional aspects of screening, our research seeks to bridge gaps in understanding and enhance the quality of cancer care delivery
Methods: The study employs validated scales, including the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), to quantitatively assess psychological distress. Qualitative insights will be gathered through structured interviews, allowing participants to share their emotional experiences during common cancer screening. Demographic and clinical factors will be scrutinized for potential correlations with distress levels.
Rationale of Study: The study is driven by the imperative to enhance our understanding of the psychological experiences of individuals undergoing cancer screening. By adopting a cross-sectional design at a tertiary cancer hospital, we aim to capture a diverse range of patient experiences during this crucial phase of care. The integration of quantitative and qualitative methods, along with the exploration of demographic and clinical correlates, aligns with the goal of providing nuanced insights for targeted interventions and support programs. This research has the potential to contribute to the improvement of patient-centred care, filling a critical gap in the current understanding of the emotional aspects of cancer screening.
