Title : Quality of life of staff nurses during the covid-19 pandemic

Abstract:

Rationale: Staff nurses play a significant role in addressing Covid-19 cases in the country, and their quality of life is inevitably affected by this pandemic. The researchers were motivated to conduct the study on the quality of life of staff nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic due to the stressful and challenging situation staff nurses faced during the pandemic and limited studies in Baguio City on the quality of life of staff nurses.

Objectives: The study aimed to determine: 1) the quality of life of staff nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic in Baguio City along the following dimensions: compassion satisfaction, perceived support, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and moral distress; 2) significant difference in the quality of life of staff nurses according to their age, gender, years in service, area of assignment, and hours of work.

Methods: Quantitative descriptive design was used in the study, utilizing proportionate sampling to count and select respondents with a total of 66 staff nurses from three hospitals in Baguio City. The data were analyzed with SPSS version 21.

Results: The quality of life of staff nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic according to compassion satisfaction was high, while perceived support, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and moral distress was average. There was a significant difference between age and compassion satisfaction, between age and perceived support, and between age and burnout, between age and compassion satisfaction, between age and perceived support, and between age and burnout.

Conclusion and Recommendations: Based on the results of the study, the quality of life of staff nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic was still favorable, indicating that staff nurses were able to work and cope efficiently despite the presence of stressors. Moreover, variables such as age and gender affected the quality of life of staff nurses. However, years in service, area of assignment, and hours of work did not affect the quality of life of staff nurses. Healthcare facilities should develop a mental health wellness program to promote the well- being of staff nurses that may sustain a good quality of life. For future studies, to include other variables such as the type of healthcare facilities.
