Forensic Nurses

Forensic Nurses play a unique and critical role at the intersection of healthcare and the legal system. These highly trained professionals care for individuals affected by violence, abuse, or neglect, including victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, elder mistreatment, and traumatic injuries related to criminal activity. In addition to providing medical care, Forensic Nurses are responsible for collecting forensic evidence, documenting injuries, and maintaining a strict chain of custody—all of which are vital for legal investigations. Some specialize further, such as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs), who perform forensic exams and often testify in court as expert witnesses.

Beyond their clinical duties, Forensic Nurses serve as advocates for vulnerable populations and work to ensure victims are treated with respect, sensitivity, and dignity. Their role extends into community outreach, education, and violence prevention efforts.
