Several strong emotions, ranging from delight and excitement to dread and worry, can be sparked by the birth of a baby. But it can also lead to something unexpected: despair. After giving birth, the majority of new mothers have postpartum "baby blues" which frequently include worry, mood fluctuations, sobbing episodes, and difficulties falling asleep. The baby blues often start two to three days after delivery and can linger for up to two weeks. Postpartum depression, on the other hand, affects certain new mothers more severely and persistently. Due to the fact that it can develop during pregnancy and persist after giving birth, it is also referred to as peripartum depression. Rarely, a severe mental illness known as postpartum psychosis might appear after giving birth.
