Title : Implications of health information interoperability

Abstract: In this paper, a current literature review was conducted to define the terms health information systems (HIS) and interoperability while identifying the various barriers and implications of the lack of interoperability between systems. An analysis between two entities, NGOC Marietta and Wellstar Health Systems Marietta, determined that there were redundancies in the collection of patient information, highlighting the lack of interoperability between its two separate EHRs. A potential solution to the disconnect between the two entities is to merge the two systems to allow digital documentation and transmission. Weekly meetings were conducted utilizing the DIKW framework with on-site clinicians, nurse informaticists, and Epic build analysts to determine a plausible method of merging while navigating multi-level barriers. Unfortunately, only a temporary solution was conceived by relying on patients to access NGOC Marietta’s website and digitally input their information while having on-site nurses manually input that data into their end of Epic. Further research must identify incentives for major stakeholders to invest in adopting EHRs that are truly interoperable or face negative long-term effects such as burnout and decaying efficiency.
