Title : Development of web-based enrichment program of EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitor induced cutaneous toxicities for oncology nurses in two regional hospitals in Hong Kong

EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKI) are developed to block the signal transduction cascades in EGFR which stop the tumor growth and is associated with cutaneous-related adverse events. According to the competency self-assessment survey conducted in oncology unit of two regional hospitals (United Christian Hospital, bed statistics: 1,174; Princess of Margaret Hospital, bed statistics: 1,700 beds), inadequate knowledge, feeling unfamiliar and unconfident as well as lack of nursing resources towards EGFR-TKI treatment are the main reasons for nurses to hesitate to perform nursing assessment proactively.

Therefore, an enrichment program in July – September 2022 have been designed to strengthen the knowledge of oncology nurses and equip them with skills on caring patients who are suffering from cutaneous toxicities induced by EGFR-TKI as well as demonstrate appropriate assessment and nursing care to the patient with cutaneous toxicities. The program is including an online lecture distributed by Nearpod (an online learning platform to integrate activities – multiple choice gamified quizzes and interactive video with content delivery and tracked records), pre-test and post-test questionnaire and evaluation interview.

All the recruited nurses (n=51) completed the pre-test and post-test. The response rate is 100%. For the pre-test, the mean score is 40% and the scores ranged from 10% to 70%.  Regarding the result of the post-test, the mean score is 92.9%.

In an qualitative interview with nurses, they expressed that web-based learning represented more flexible learning approach. They are in full control and accountability for their learning and self-allocate time and place for their learning without affecting their job routine. Also, establishment of resource persons in respective hospitals allowed nurses to raise questions if in doubt.

Nurses are in the ideal position for the management of EGFR-TKI related cutaneous toxicities to maintain patients’ quality of life and promote treatment adherence.

Audience Take Away Notes:

  • Establish a web-based learning platform which represented more flexible learning approach
  • More interactive way for nurses to self-study at their own pace
  • Great motivation propelling nurses to learn more
  • Establishment of resource persons allowed nurses to raise the questions if in doubt
