Title : LGBTQ + Cultural competency: Implementing nurse education preparation workshops for inclusionary curriculum
Abstract:
Members of the LGBTQ+ population face discrimination in all facets of their lives, including from healthcare providers. Research indicates that the state of LGBTQ+ health education in pre-licensure and graduate nursing programs does not yield sufficient cultural competency. In addition, nursing faculty also report feelings of underpreparedness, lack of knowledge, and insufficient time as barriers to implementing LGBTQ+ health considerations into nursing curricula. Despite action initiatives from national health organizations, there is currently no overarching standard for the curricular inclusion of these concepts. Through the translation of evidence through the OMRU framework, this project offers guidance to nursing leaders by evaluating the impact of a LGBTQ+ education workshop on nursing educators’ knowledge, attitudes, and intent to incorporate LGBTQ+ health concepts into their curriculum.
